Default Need help spending graduation money.

Just bought an '04 400ex and want to make it beat a stock z400 on the track and everywhere else. I have about $1500 from my graduation to put into the bike. I know of three things Im going to get; Wider axle, new pipe, and new filter. Could you guys help me choose the mods? It would be great to give the name of the mod, priority in a list, and the price. One more thing, I don't want to mess with the engine, I just want a bike that can take a z400 with ease. Thanks!

#1 You're not going to be able to beat a Z400 in the power department without considerable modification to the engine. I'm talking cams, big bore, etc.

#2 If you're satisfied with the stability of the quad as is, I'd take that $1500 and spend it on some Elka's front and rear. Don't know if your money will cover the entire cost, but it'd sure come close. Works suspension would also be a good alternative.

Personally, I much prefer handling and suspension. If you're a good rider, you could whip a Z400 in the whoops and such with the suspension mods.

if you add a pipe, jets, filter you should be keeping up but im not sure about beating a z400, and if your a good rider you can spank almost anything on the track, the 400ex is setup good for all around i dont think youll have to worry bout that and with your money you wont have enough for shocks with the pipe and everyone on here will tell you to pipe it first...

I dont have a 400ex but from what i've learned on the forums, the best mods for a 400ex are a pipe, filter, cam, piston, jet it, and there seem to be a lot of 440s out there.

Thats true. But with my set up I have now I can beat a Z400 through woods and in a drag and track.

if you just got out of school i'd enjoy the bike for what it is and research the mods more and put the money in the bank, it's amazing what kind of deals you will find when you have cash.

I've heard a lot of good stuff about Curtis Spark's pipes. What is the best overall pipe to get, for track and all? I was thinking a complete pipe, with header and all. Also, will a rev box make the bike less reliable? I'm kind of leary about changing the rev limiter if its going to blow the engine up or somethin. Thanks
