hey, whats up, the wheel bearing on my 400ex is giveing up, but i am not sure which way to turn the axle nut. Is it like a normal nut left is loose and right is tight or is it the oppisite way around. thanks

IF it has a cotter pin on it then it should be standard right hand threads.

no it dont have a cotter pin. its a 400ex and it wont even come off with a 2foot pipe wrench and with a 4 foot bar on the end of it. so the the nut closesd to the rear tire (outside) does it go up or down

It is left hand thread, so it goes down. I couldn't get mine off with a wrench either. I had to use a hammer and cold chisel. I ended up just cutting the nut and buying a new one. The inside and outside nuts turn in opposite directions. Good luck with it.

so on the lock nut (closest to the rotor) when i turn down it loosens and when i turn it back up it tightens. so the bigger nut (on the outside) would have to go up right? THIS is of course when i am sitting down directly behind the 4 wheller. I got the lock not loose by turning the nut down wards(the handle of the pipe wrench was facing towards the back of the 4 wheller (out the door.

That's right, loosen up the locking nut as far as it will go, then turn the outer nut the OPPOSITE direction, it will come all the way off your axle. This is the nut that holds your axle in. The other one (the one closest to the rotor )locks this nut in place. When you have this assembly off the axle, you can then slide the axle out of the swing arm to the left. Make sure you clean the nuts real good because you will want to use locktite on the LOCKING nut when you reasemble.

Glad I could help insaine.
Just passing on information that was passed on to me on this forum. If you get the chance, pass it on to someone else who may need it.

I think the second purchase after ANY person buys a quad should be to purchase a service manual. Well spent $30. They're usually all over Ebay, even CD versions.

Good Luck,
Rob
