450R problems
I have recently purchased a honda TRX450R and it is running great. I have put barely any hours on it. But one of the local powersports dealers is saying that after 50 hours the 450 motors are gernading. Im breaking in my 450 perfect and I dont want my motor to blow. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

ive heard the same thing about them too. it shouldnt happen its prolly happening to the guys who ride ***** to the walls like me and have your atvs break on you all the time. im used to it already. if your breaking it in really carefully and taking care of your quad and always changing and checkin the oil it should be good to you

i talked to an owner of a 450r and he also works at a honda shop and he informed me that both honda and yamahas 450's are strickly built for high performance and need to be treated like a 250r. A hint from him was to change the oil almost everytime u ride it. That sounds crazy to me but what do i know.

I'd really like to know about the rebuild as well. There's too many different numbers thrown out there. If this bike needs a new top end even with 80-100 hours on it, then that will drastically change the market for it. There's a lot of guys with 400ex's sitting on the fence about getting one of these 450r's or throwing on a 416 kit for the 400ex's.

I don't have a whole lot of hours on mine, because the desert riding season doesn't start until fall. But, I know lots of guys with the dirt bike that have over 100 hours on their engines, without touching them. And, the quad has an extra ring that the dirt bike doesn't, so it should be even more durable.
Urban myth I think! Have you seen even a single post in here about a blown engine??? You know if it was REALLY happening, there would be at least one post by now.

The problem is that the answer to this question is so vague. I wouldnt buy a 450R if i had to change the top end every 30-40 hours, thats rediculous and in fact I wouldnt buy it if it needed changed every 100 hours. People mostly buy 4 strokes because of the ease of maintanence and that you dont need to rebuild constantly. I had a 99' 400ex that had WELL over 500 hours on it bone stock, and never needed anything whatsoever other than the standard oil change and lubes. In fact if it wasnt stolen i'd have put more hours on it. I have a new 2003 400ex sitting in the garage, and im debating on whether or not to put a 416 kit in it, or wait on some more results in regards to the 450R.

I agree with the urban legend theory. If the 450's were failing, there would definitely be posts on it.
I also agree that the difference in price between the 450r and 400ex right now would probably keep me on the 400ex with mods side of the fence.
With proven durability, buying a used one in a year or two could be a viable option.
