Are you talking about an additional in-line filter?

A fuel filter should NOT effect the performance of the ATV. If it does there is something wrong.

yeah, an in-line fuel filter.

Do they just screen out large peices of trash that are in the gasoline?

The chief effect it would have would be to allow the machine to continue performing by trapping the impurities in your tank or fuel.

The performance of your machine would only be affected negatively with an additional filter if you had a pressurized system, which you do not.

Why would an additional filter effect a pressurized system? The system would still force the fuel into the filter until it was filled up. The only way a fuel filter could possibly be bad would be if it was plugged up or not allowing enough fuel through it starving the engine of fuel (leaning the motor out). Hopefully this wouldn't happen since I'm sure you would not want to see daylight through your piston.

Fuel filters are usually installed to prevent future crap entering your carb, possibly clogging a jet or something.

A pressurized system requires a filter designed for this system. not all filters can be used. therefore a fuel starvation problem would be present.
