If i didn't have my 86' trx250r I think I would get a 400ex with the 440 kit, i rode a completely brand new, stock 400ex at pismo dunes and damn i was impressed, i had so much fun on that bike, good suspension, nice power, felt great to sit on.

Pro:
Rock solid reliable
Very upgradeable, many parts availible, and cheap to do it
Great handling
Pretty decent power for most trail and recreational riders. If its not enough, look above.
Air cooling almost always adequate and it saves weight, possible breakdown, and one less thing to take care of.
Dirt cheap for new and used.
Lot of them around so there is a great knowledge base.

Con:
Too underpowered in stock form and it takes serious mods to get it to run with piped big bores and 450cc class bikes.
Too small for some
Too many around. Not good if you want to be unique.

All in all, its a great machine and if all you ever plan to do is ride recreationally and race your friends its a good choice.
I wouldnt ever tell someone not to get one if thats what they wanted. Its 95% kawisukicat for about 70% of the price.

What irritates me is!
Those 6-packs work pretty good.

Wish it had stiffer shocks.

Overall it's a great quad!

Can you mount up the 450R shocks to it?

Love this bike! At first I wish it had reverse but have gotten use to not having it so its no big deal now.
IMO, its a very complete all around package. Best bang for the buck. If it were up to me, the only thing I would add to this already great machine would be a brake light (so your buddies know when your slowing down or stopping) and keep the price where it is at.

the 400ex is probably the best stunt quad made...its a great toy...the design is basically perfect
you can ride wheelies forever!

the only thing I would change is power-wise..I just upgraded to a 416ex, and love it!! the extra low end makes it perfect for duning
