Hope someone can help me out with this. I just bought a 2001 250EX. The kid who had it put a different muffler on it, and didn't put the gasket back on when he hooked the pipe back into the motor. This caused a massive exhaust leak, which my brother fixed. Now that we could hear the engine better, there is a really loud pinging. My brother adjusted the valves to the correct gap, which made the pinging a lot louder. We are kind of at a loss about what to do next. It also seems to be flooding itself. Any suggestions??? Could the fact that it has a different muffler than the original have something to do with this? Or could it be that where it had the exhaust leak, and the kid rode it like that, have done damage to something else??
We also have changed the oil twice, since it didn't look like it have ever been changed!

Please help!! I bought this for my son, and I am anxious for him to actually be able to enjoy it.

Not sure if this helps but I read somewhere that if you change the exhaust pipe you need to rejet the carb. You might want to do a search on this.

 

Thanks! I think you are on the right track. I have been searching the internet, and everything seems to lead to that. I'd really like to put the original muffler on if I can find a good used one.

People should really rejet even if they change the air filter or exhaust. Maybe you could find a stock muffler and start from the beginning.

 

That sounds like a honda to me pinning,smoking,oil dirty after an hour of riding,get a real bike POLARIS!!! it will put an end to all your woories. Hey I know a guy in pliny that might fix that 250 for cheap! DAVEY

Hey mom! Honda is just like an a$$hole everyone has one! Get off the bandwagon and get the boy a real machine! POLARIS! just look on their forum and see what they have to say.Hondas have no greese fittings,so they sound like and old tricycle when you ride them! the brakes are crap! I would'nt let my 13 year old ride sh@# like that. i'd be a fool to let her ride a honda. So try to get a grip and thank about the safety of you'r child!!
