Default Changing oil in my 400EX

I am at work right now, so I can't take a picture. This has nothing to do with your brakes, the cap might even be blue. But if you pull the cap off you will see the zirk fitting. I am going home to double check myself, as now you have me worried. You should see a very little bit of white grease oozing (another technical farm boy term) out of the joint. That zirk fitting is how you get the grease in there to keep it lubricated. The more hard riding you do in dirt/heat/water or mud, the more you want to put new grease into the joint. If you have the owners manual check around page 42 in the maintenance/oil and greasing instructions. There will be a table called #1 in the front of the maual for reference that tells you what to use and how much. I hope I have helped.

Unless I was misunderstanding something, schematics are for electrical wiring, so you won't find it there.

OK, IMPORTANT NOTE HERE: My reply about lithium grease related to zirks in general, ok. I have never found any zirks on the 400EX, and I don't think the owners manual mentions any. I think those things you found with the plastic caps, are WHERE YOU BLEED THE BRAKES! They do look a little like zurks, but notice that the hole in the top is way bigger than a zirk. Do not try and put grease in these, OK!!!!!

Good article on engine oil, if you haven't read it:

OK Thanks reconranger for clearing that up. I really didn't think honda had started putting zerks on their quads.

Look for a bolt, below the shift lever (about in the middle of it). As I recall, the picture in the manual is pretty good, so just look and you will find it eventually. The oil will run over some frame tubes, so that may be what is fooling you. After the oil has drained, tip the bike up on its left side, and you will get quite a bit of extra oil out!

Use a lithium based greese (won't get washed away by water) on zirks.
You do not want to tip quad on side to get extra dirty motor oil out of engine. Honda has engineered special oil retaining reservoirs on each end of cam so that when you start the bike up cold the cam bearings get immediate oil. If you tip quad and drain this oil then when you start cold motor after oil change the cam bearings will be running dry until the oil pump gets oil up to the cam bearings and this is very bad. For info the oil left in these two cam bearing oil reservoirs is extremely small and makes no difference in overall quality of new oil but makes very big difference in lubrication to cam bearings. Now please do not try to tell me that you have been doing this for 5 years and never had a problem. Just do one top end job on the 400 motor and you will be convinced for life.
