I have a Pro Circuit T4 slip-on and I think its works just fine. Love the way it sounds!
Unless your motor is bored oversize or you have a high reving cam with a higher compression piston, I would stick with the stock headpipe. Its better for low end torque anyway which the 400EX motor works best at, IMO.

i run an e series on my 400ex and a trinity on the z400 there both real nice pipes as far as the e series breaking i havnt had my ex long enough to find out the e series was already on it. the trinity is awsome but a little loud. a buddy of mine runs a t-4 on his raptor and its got a real good sound and not to loud at all. the big guns are real loud also
but man hey theres a lot of good pipes out there i think you would probably be happy with any aftermarket pipe as long as you rejet and probably a filter which you said you was gonna do.(WHATEVER YOU BUY DO NOT BUY A DG I HAD ONE ON MY 300EX PIECE OF CRAP UNBELEIVELY LOUD NOT MUCH HP GAIN UGLY THE ONLY PLUS IS THAT IS VERY CHEAP
