Hey all.

Currently I ride a Polaris Scrambler 400 2x4. ( I know, I know, spare the me the lecture! )

The scrambler is a 2 stroke machine, and is fairly fun to ride. I primarily ride trails around here in New Hampshire which are a mix of light to moderate mud puddles, there are some small sand pit area's to ride. The trails are usually very rooty(is that a word?) rocky, over all...a blast to ride.

What I'm wondering is, I have a chance to trade my Scrambler for a Honda Rubicon, it'll be a 2001 rubi, in good condition over all from what I'm told. How do you think this bike would be on the trails? Basically I'm looking to trade for something with 4wd, and trying to get away from the two stroke bikes, even tho they are a blast to ride.

i went from a 2003 ac 500 to a 2004 rubicon and i love it the thing is like a goat.
it will go almost anywere, and its awsom on the trails and thats mostly what i ride and i think its great.
when i first got it i found the steering to be stiff,but thats because its in 4x4 all the time.
and it has all 4 wheels pulling evan in the corners.
but when i put in the inch and a half lift kit and the 26inch tires the steering got easyer.
and way better handeling and better on the trails.
because of the lift kit, it pulled the front wheels in a bit and made it easyer to steer.
i love the transmission i put it in auto for cruiseing and manual for the trails and mud and water riding.

Do you have any advice on what I should look for on the Rubicon? Any trouble issues? Also is the Warn 424 kit worth it?

 

i herd that if you dont install the 424 kit properly you'll have trouble with it.
i think that red goblin had some trouble with his befor.
the only thing i think it needs to be improuved on, is it needs better skidplates under the front.
when i had my cat i would ride it 2 wheel drive all the time.
and then when you need to put it into 4x4 its too late your already stuck.
i like it in 4 wheel drive all the time because its one less thing to do when going from road to the mud and steep hills where you need 4x4 to get up.
i did that once try going up a steep hill and half way up it dug in the back tires and stoped and i had to go backwords down hill and try it again.
when i put it in 4x4 and tryed again it made it no problem.
plus it wares your back tires out faster.
as for problems.
i've got 1300 klms on mine so far and have had nothing but plesure with it.

If I get the 424 kit, it'll be done by a dealer I dont feel like screwing with that. The skid plates dont really bother me though, as I work in a machine shop and can make my own! =)

 

By chance have you looked into the 500 scrambler 4x4? Same thing as the one you got now, but with a 500cc 4 stroke and selectable 4wd.

the warn 424 kit is NOT worth it. if youre goin to spend 400 bucks on the warn kit why wouldnt you spend it to get the rincon? that would be the better move, trust me. plus you have to spend MORE money to have the dealer install it. buy the rincon

oh, i thought you were buying the rubi new, sorry. yeah buy the warn kit

If you buy the Rubi, install a Perfex long travel kit for a vastly improved ride.
