Because the sound is deeper and it travels like 12 times further.

 

Because that's exactly how dB's work. Every 3dB = 2x as loud. It's a logarithmic scale.

 

What is the quietest pipe available for the 400EX that still makes decent power?

 

i heard the Q pipe made by FMF was quite but then i also heard it actually takes power away, and then i was reading in my ronnies cycle magazine * www.ronnies.com * about another pipe that was barly louder than stock and produced 30% more power w/ right jetting. so i'm gonna look into that, i can let you know if wanted.
