Default Remove 400ex snorkle?

Does that snorkle restrict airflow? I think I am goin to take it off. I don't ride through much mud or deep water. How many people here removed theres?

I just removed the airbox lid. Wow I'm surprised, I gained mid range power and throttle response. You think I'm goin to be running to lean? I also already have a K&N filter. Free power? Or will this harm my engine in the long run?

You will probably be running a little lean. Keep an eye on you head pipes to make sure they don't glow red, an indication of running lean. The engine runs too hot. You would be best to jet up a bit.

Oh yea, the snorkle does restrict airfolw. However, if you remove the airbox lid you don't need to remove the snorkle.

Would there be an even more pronounced power gain by jetting up a little bit to even the mixture out?

If you're not riding in mud and water leave the lid off. Add a pipe too! Check out "jetting 400EX" thread, lots of good suggestions on it for you.

thanks alot for your help. I'm going to save up money to start modding the 400ex. I think i'll prolly save up for a slip on but it can't be to loud or I can't bring it to silver lake and I might **** my neighbors off. I was also considering getting a stage 1 hot cam. Are those hard to install? Do they require any specail tools? I'll prolly end up making a thread asking about them but any info I can get about them now is good. I just don't want to have to take my bike to a stealer for them to charge me more money for them to install it that what the camshaft itself cost.

Firts thing you'll want to do is pick up a shop manual.
Follow what it says and you'll be able to change your own cam and adjust your valves.
Go for a slip on. You can choose from quite a few that aren't overly loud.
Have to be below 96db out here (at the Oregon dunes). I have an FMF Megamax II on the 400.
