make sure your throttle cable is adjusted properly. if you have too much slack in it, your hurting the power very very bad. i would have no more than 1/4 inch of slack in the throttle cable. now, make sure you leave a little bit in there or the idle can raise up when you raise the bars.
also, if your remove the air box lid, you MUST change the jetting. you will be running really really lean and could fry the motor. i would imagine the bike would be quicker with teh air box lid on unless your live in very hot temperatures or at higher elevation levels. here at 625 feet above sealevel and around 40 degrees outside, if i take the air box lid off it will run terrible without a jetting change. it may feel quicker because of the extra noise and vibration, but actually your only hurting the motor and not getting a power gain.
