Ok,my neighbor wants to sell me a 01 400ex, as it sits it runs ok,but it ticks loudly and smokes blueish white(doesnt smoke bad).we adjusted the valves, but it still ticks the same. He told me he had over filled the oil, said someone told him to put almost 4 quarts of oil in it.Well after the valve adjustment,it still ticks and smokes, doesnt sound like a rod knocking, what do you guys htink is causing the ticking and smoking?

Well, I'm no expert........ but I'll give you my 2 cents for what it's worth.
Mine ticks, my brothers ticked, heard others 400ex's tick - some more loudly than others - not sure what the cause is. I thought it was a problem with mine until I heard others and everyone said it was normal - I only notice it when I'm sitting on it.
As for the smoke - I'd guess it's the rings/piston, or could be just overfill on the oil maybe.
One of the gearheads around here should be able to help more - speak up boys (or girls) and help a bro out!

this one didnt tick when he first got it.you can clearly hear the ticking. I dont want to go spend money on a piece of crap.If the valves are adjusted right, what would be making it tick still. When your turning the crank through the side casing,to set the timing mark, every couple of rotations you hear a snapping sound, wich is most likely the sound we are hearing when started just faster. its a 2001 and he only wants 1200 like it is.but i want to have a good idea about whats wrong with it

Check to see if the timing chain is streched out, that can make a ticking or knocking noise, if it had a bad spot in it where the link was stuck, that could be what you hear turning it over by hand. You should be able to take the top cover off the side and check for play in the chain, then make sure the automatic adjuster is working, or if it is already at full travel.
