Extended A-Arms and Shock Length
#1
Hello All,
I have a '00 400EX with stock suspension all the way around and ride MX. I am considering upgrading my front shocks & A-Arms, but don't want to purchase both at one time.
My question is: if I replace my stock front shocks with aftermarket shocks (i.e. TCS, AXIS, or Works), and later upgrade my A-Arms to the +2, +3 variety, will the shocks still work or are they actually longer when the A-arm length changes?
Thanks for the help!

get your a-arms first then shocks or you will have to send in the shocks to get revalved or even re-springed, So you don't want to put shocks set-up for stock lenght a-arms then to +2or3 a-arms on the same aftermarket shock set-up.

First of all, aftermarket shocks are all the same length regardless of a-arm width. You can get shocks built to be stock length, but everyone makes them about .5" longer to add travel. If you go with a Pro Trax or Roll LOBO setup then the shocks are between 18" and 19" long compared to about 16.5" with regular a-arms. If you are seriously planning on getting wider arms then get the shocks built for them right away. You can still ride a stock width front end with shocks built for a +2 front end. It is still a lot better than stock.

Aftermarket shocks are the exact same for +2 or stock, HOWEVER, the valving is different and they put stoppers on them for +2s to prevent frame bottoming. Trust me, I just went through it with Works. I wasted $130 by getting shocks and then getting +2s because i had to send them back to be revalved. Get the shocks first and set them up for +2 IF you are going to actually get the +2s. You can always loosen the preload to soften the springs up until you get the +2s.
