my buddy's 250r iwas running fine and dandy but we discided to put aftermarket reeds and cages in it. we also put in a reed spacer and it ran like crap so we took it off. then just the reeds and it ran good then the exhaust fell off then it ran like crap put some heavy duty springs on it and try it again and it ran like crap. were at 165 main jet with stock carb pipes and open airbox with a k&N and cant seem to get it to run better so maybe you all can help. also we took off the little ram air system on it. basically it ran fine but when we changed the reeds it started running bad

New reeds/aftermarket reeds can make your engine run "richer" than it was. First, make sure everything is properly mounted, like the exhust! That will affect performance. Make sure air filter is sealed well and oiled properly.
Now, if it runs bad, do you mean at top end? mid range? bottom end? Regardless of where it runs bad, it's jetting.
Install a fresh plug and gap it, warm it up good, ride until warm, then hold the throttle wide open in 5th or 6th gear for about 10 seconds. Then, while holding the throttle wide open, pull in the clutch and shut off the engine and let the quad coast to a stop. Check the plug. Black/oily is too rich and you need to step down a size in the main jet. White/dry is too lean and you need to increase the main jet size. If you are running a .165 main with stock carb/pipe and a K&N with no lid and installed new reeds you most likely need to step down one jet size and see how it runs; try a .162. Don't eff with the carb needle, just leave it in the middle.
