Default 400ex runs like SHlT

Today when I tryed to start it, it would not start. I fouled out my plug. I'm runnin a K&N air filter w/o an outerwear, This exhaust, 165 Dyno main jet, stock pilot, needle on 3rd clip, feul screw is 3.5 turns out and no air box lid. The problem is the thing does NOT want to ever start! And when it does start it'll make this poppin sound by the airfilter and is just sputtering, and i'm holdin the throttle just a lil to keep it goin because it won't idle untill its really warmed up. I hear it will start better if you get a 42 pilot? The other thing That bothers me is that when I let of the throttle or deccelerate it will backfire. Dynojet recomends using a 170 MJ with no airbox lid and aftermarket exhaust. You think that would be to rich or what? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

PS:after I changed the plug it does the symtoms I described above.

It also runs and starts up fine after its been warmed up. I havn't checked the vavle clearances yet. Another question, i'm hearing a steady ticking sound from the right exhaust valve side. I heard that, that could mean some sort of decompresser on the cam is jamed?

Adjust your valves first off...that would most likely get rid of the ticking. Do the free/cheap stuff before you jump into buying new parts

read this, it will tell you everything you need to know about jetting. adjust ur valves, and re-jet according to this. there is no set jetting set-up for any exhaust or other mods. i know of guys who re-jet according to weather (they also run drag bikes and are **** about performance).

jetting tips

i just looked at that "exhaust" and it looks like it's not an exhaust at all, it's an exhaust tip. if the opening is bigger than stock then it will let a lil more exhaust flow through, but it will have no where near the performance gains a full aftermarket exhaust system, or even just a slip-on muffler. if dynojet reccomends a 170 main jet for an aftermarket exhaust, then that is a very generalized statement, because different exhausts at different altitudes require different main jets. i'm not sure what stock is, but your probably running too rich of a main jet if your popping on deceleration. try going down on your main. are there any spots in the powerband where it feels like you have no power? 1/4 throttle? 1/2 throttle? 3/4 throttle? does it idle fine once it's warmed up?

a larger pilot jet should help the starting. also, when starting the bike, just pump the gas a few times. then hit the start button withOUT hitting the gas anymore. this is why your flooding it. if you run an aftermarket ignition box, this may really effect your starting. you need to clean out the carb really well. remove the jets and spray carb cleaner through all the jets and the carb itself. make sure you have a good connection on all air boots. you may have an air leak. make sure no air boot is cracked or broke. also, valve clearances need to be correct. a new plug couldn't hurt either. put in a 155 dynojet at the largest with your mods.

check out your carb settings and choke...this could be many of possible problems

I'm with cals400ex on this one, go back to a 155dynojet. Just for an example, I run a 165dj on my 440

No kiddin its just a tip but it lets it flow better because its not just a bigger opening it also removes the baffle at the end and spark arrestor. I just ordered an White Bro's R4 slip on. And it never bogs down on me. But to be completly honest it feels like I had a little for midrange with the stock tip. Any suggestions?

Cal, I found out somthing interesting when I took out my main jet a for the first time. It was a Dynojet (had the adaptor and the screw in jet) 165. I was runnin the 165 with the airbox lid on, and stock tip. What do you think about that? I'll try a 155 and tell you how it runs. thanks.

hey I just tried the 155 main jet. thanks alot it runs alot better. It pulls alot longer on the top end than it did. Also It doesn't vibrate as much at top speed wide open anymore.
