Another Rancher problem for me!

Well after fixing my carb problem, I took the bike out for a ride today. I turned off the road into the woods, road over some small trees in second gear. I thought I was in first so I pulled the brake in to shift into reverse, hit the button a few times and it wouldn't shift out of second. You could hear it trying to shift but it wouldn't, I tried the manual shift but it wouldn't shift it either, the shifter shaft was moving but it wouldn't change gears.
So I get it out on the road again and make my way home in 2nd, trying to shift it on the way but no luck. I stopped again and propped the bike up on the rear rack and looked for some obvious signs of a broken wire but I didn't see anything. I tried hitting the buttons but this time there was no function at all, I turned the key off and let it sit, turned it back on and the buttons worked again but still wouldn't shift. I rode it home and to my surprise I was able to shift up, BUT not down!!! So now my bike is stuck in 5th gear...this is really bad!!! What do you guys suggest?

This must be something internal and mechanical right? Because when I hit the buttons I can hear it trying to shift but it just won't do it, plus I can't even change the gears with the manual foot lever. The shaft will move but it won't go in gear!

With the carb problem I had I think I may have got some gas in the sump. I drained the oil and added some new oil, started the bike and let it work the new oil in but it still won't shift down! The bike still runs fine but it won't shift electricaly or manualy, do you think a bit of gas that MAY have got in the sump might have locked something up in the tranny? Looks like I may have to take it into the shop which is really going to suck!!!

The ES still is working, I can hear it working...it just won't shift the gears.

From what I can gather here it appears as though you may have a transmission problem, not an ES problem. Give us a sitrep when diagnosed further.

I would definatly say it's a transmission problem! I just went out and put the manual shifter on it, when I shift it up you here the normal distictive sound of it shifting, but when I try to shift it down there is movement but no distinctive sound of it catching the gear!

Not necessarily a trans problem i wouldnt think. I am a mechanic but not familiar with the internals or solenoids on these transmissions, but from what i have read, there are solenoids that upship and then there are other ones that downshift. If a solenoid has binded it would keep the transmission from shifting. Same theory with the power door lock actuators on cars. They freeze up and cant move the full length of their design. you cant lock or unlock the door manually because the linkage is attached to the solenoind actuator. It will click and try to move everytime you touch the button. I bet its gonna be a shift solenoid problem. Let us know what you find out..I have also heard that Honda had a shift solenoid recall. One of my friends has an 01 rancher and he carried it in for the recall. You may want to check on this as well with your dealer.. good luck.
