Last saturday me and Xr80rampage went riding at broken spokes raceway, and there was MAJOR dust. By the end of the day everything was covered in dust (including me). I was riding with my K&N, no airbox lid, and no outerwears. The K&N was coated in dirt, I mean it was nasty dirty. When I got home I took it off to clean/oil it, and the inside of the filter and the air intake boot were spotless. I couldn't believe it!, the outside of the filter looks like it was soaked in mud for a week, the inside looks brand new. After reading some of the K&N horror stories, I was worried, but I now have my faith back in K&N. Oh, also today I took out my old foam filter and swapped it with the K&N, I could notice a big difference in low end, too. I guess I will be keeping my K&N from now on.

Filtering air is the same whether it's a John Deere, or a Ferrari.

the air intake or wherever the air is coming from is probably covered up more, like on the 400ex, you can sling mud into your airbox

It don't matter where your air cleaner is, if you're sitting in the middle of a dust cloud, your quad is breathing dusty air. Just because it's more or less exposed doesn't mean the air getting to your filter is any cleaner or dirtier.

I've had mud, water, dirt, grass, all kinds of stuff in my airbox, it's not covered any better than the 400ex's is.
