i am gonna buy 2 new quads. A small sport (z250 or 250ex) and a mid size ute. (still not sure)

The 250EX is not a Recon! The cranks are different, the gear ratio in the transmission (all five gears) are different and the front brakes. They are two very different quads. Check the price of the factory parts like fenders steering stems. Between the Honda and the Suzuki the Honda is cheaper to fix when you wreck it and you will every one does.

Is there an explanation for the different gearing? The recon is a sport/utility bike while the 250ex is a sport bike. Since the Recon has utilitity features, it requires more torque for the jobs it might do. With that in mind, the gearing is lower so torque is more easily accessible through the powerband. Also, the Recon is heavier than the 250ex.
