05 TRX450R or TRX400EX can't decide

I would agree about the Z400. I wanted a little more power and speed for the desert and dunes, so I got the R. If I had to choose between the Z and the EX, I'd DEFINATELY take the Z. But bone stock, there is ZERO competition between the Z and my R. A few months ago at St. Anthony sand dunes, I smoked so many of them in the hilclimb/drags I got to the point I didn't want to waste my gas on them anymore. Granted, there were plenty of tricked out R's and YFZ's that ate ME for lunch too, so it was fair.

Ummm, not a trike! Russb, the EX won't even come close to the stock power of your old trike. 85-86 ATC250R's are the only non 2 wheeled bikes I've seen beat Raptor's and Banshee's, stock for stock. Since you seem to know how to ride, you would definitely be happier on the 450. Plus you're use to kick start and no reverse anyway!
the 450 will spank a 250r in stock form I know my brother just did it the other day

I think he was talking about the 400ex wouldn't compare to the 250R. Like I said before who is faster really isn't important to me. What I want is good handling and power when I need it.

I have had both a 2000 400ex and now own a 2004 450R and it all boils down to how you want to ride. Getting the 400ex to perform as well as the 450R is going to cost a lot more than $500. However, the 400ex is a much easier quad to ride and is what you would probably like for trail riding and hill climbs. I love my 450 on the track and it is ok on the trails except for the high gearing and lack of low end power.
