knocking noise in transmission
#1
I have a 1980 185, and their is a loud knocking noise coming from the transmission. I split the case and looked at the gears but I dont see any broken teeth, what else should I look for. Any help would be appreciated.

Does it always do it, even with the clutch engaged or disengaged? Maybe the teeth are not broken but wore out so much that they aren't meshing together properly. Did you check the shift forks and drum?

It does it the most, and really bad too in first gear, it only does it a little in neutral and the other gears. I do see a little wearing on the teeth, but I've seen that before and it never made a noise like this. It's so loud and bad that I thought it would be obviouse when I looked inside but apparentl not.

Had a Yamaha dirtbike one time that started knocking as you describe. Like to have never found the problem. It was a crack in the ring gear around the clutch hub. When it would meet with the crank gear it would seperate enough to make a knock noise. This was a tiny hair line crack between the teeth on the clutch hub teeth. Several years later I had a buddy who owned a Honda Magna and it started knocking. WE tore it down and checked transmission and found nothing. After about the second tear down we found it to be the same as the Yamaha had been a few years before. It also was the clutch hub ring gear cracked.

I stripped the whole motor down, and it was a whole gear in the bottom of the motor, and part of the mainshaft was wore down, and a busted piston ring, there is shards of metal everywhere. So far I have it all cleaned up, the new parts I need, except for gaskets, and oil rings. As soon as I get the rest of the parts I will start rebuilding everything. This is my first time doing this so I hope everything turns out right. I have the book and a buddy who is telling me what to do. Any advice on what to make sure and do would be valuable, thanks.
