Is this worth the money 1987 250r?
I have found a 1987 trx250r for sale. The owner says that it needs a new sleeve in the cylinder along with the rest of the components for a new top end. This is the add:
I can pick up a running motor for 500-700 for this and I can buy the quad itself for 800-1000. I can do all the mechanical work myself. I have pictures and it looks to be in pretty good shape, just needs cleaned up and the motor repaired. I am not familiar with these quads so any input would be helpful. Are these pretty fast?
I have a TRX 87 250r that needs a resleeved cylinder to be able to run again , the motor is out of the frame at this time . It has the old aftermarket maier red plastic ,not cracked , dg nerf bars , a stock and a fmf pipe , k and n filter , all the shocks are fatory and are not blown , good rear hole shot tires , and a serive manual

Pick it up, NOW. That is one helluva deal(if you don't want it, get me some contact info cause I want it!). You say you are not familiar with these quads, well they dominated just about every aspect of racing from the mid eighties all the way up to when the YFZ450 was released. That bike is a legend. As for how fast they are, depends on the $$$$. They are like Banshee's in that they have an unlimited number of modification possibilities, however in stock form they are somewhat mild-mannered. You don't even need to spend $500 for a new motor, you can spend less than $100 for good shape cylinder off Ebay, and a piston kit is less than $100, also. The only thing I would check for is a cracked frame. Oh, and while you have it apart, I would replace all the bearings, bushings, and seals on the chassis and related components.

Easy,
Nice pics!
On the frame look for cracks around the foot pegs, front and rear motor mounts, A-arm mounts , sub frame , and around
seat latch. Any cracks can be fixed, bent stuff is another thing. 850 is a decent price for a good start. Congrats! and good luck.

Well I brought the 250r home today and am very pleased so far. The plastic is in great shape. Overall the whole thing is very clean. They guy also had a clymer manual to go along with it. Managed to find some deals on ebay for the cylinder 57 shipped including the head, a new weisco piston kit for 32 shipped. Ordered gasket set and wrist pin with 2 day shipping for 47. Now I just need to get the cylinder bored $60 and it should be running for a total of 1046. Hopefully it won't need anything major after I get it running. Looks like it was taken pretty good care of.
