How do you check your valves/timing. I keep hearing that but havne't done it as I don't have 30 hours on my quad.

Tom,

1) Make sure your battery is charged all the way. If my EX is cranking, sometimes it still wont start without of full charge.
2) Make sure you are getting spark - but you probably already checked that.
3) You can also replace the plug - sometimes they get fouled.
4) If you have an aftermarket CDI - put the stock one in and try starting it. The aftermarket CDI timing curves are a little to advanced for cold starting. I put the stock one in and let it warm up then replace it with the aftermarket one.

I put any animals i can find in there. Including bears, cougars, bobcats, deer, elk, rabbits, birds, racoons, possums, and all others i can find. I'm very dissapointed in u guys for wanting it to snow for ur own pleasure while animals don't have a house that's warm to sleep in at night. I'm verry disgusted in u guys!! Selfish pigs!!!

Mines finicky in the cold too, here is what works for me.

Two throttle pumps, full choke, and crank it. It fires every time then, don't know why it has to be 2 pumps, but if it works I don't question it.

If nothin else give it a shot of starting fluid or something flammable, it isn't good for them but it does the job!

I have an 03 and it's really cold blooded, but it does start. I'm curious about this 42 pilot jet. I live clear across the country from you and I wonder if it will make any difference. It's cold here now (about 40 degrees) But will this cause any problems in the summer heat(60)? Mine fires fine if I pump the throttle a few times but dies easy. So I just keep pumping and cranking until I get it to idle on it's own. I notice my buddies Z400 and warriors seems to have a fast idle circuit. But not mine.,
