Default How do you get a 450R to start in the winter?

I was wondering if onyone had found a good way to get a Honda 450R to start in the winter without it being in a heated garage. I have a completely stock 2004 450R with about 15 hours on it and it will not start if the temperature is below 40 degrees. I have starting fluid but was told it would possibly damage the engine. Any suggestions?

Starting fluid can damage the piston... are you sure you put the choke on and your hot-start isnt on?

I've owned honda's for years, and first thing you do if it's 20 deg. or lower is get on and rock bike back and forth, just a little, not violently or anything, for 10 seconds. This separates the air bubbles out of the fuel in the bowl so that the carb can pickup fuel better. With the choke on, it should just start. If it isn't than you need to increase your pilot jet size accordingly. I'd suggest 1 size at a time.

Now that the cold temps are here, the mixture is too lean at idle. A bigger pilot jet, or 1/2 turn more rich on the mixture screw should do it.
I wouldnt use starting fuild on a new motor, either.
If it just wont kick start and you want to go riding, have someone hook up a tow strap and pull start it.

Before you kick it, pump the throttle one or two times, put the choke on, then kick it. Do not touch the throttle at all while kicking, a few stabs at the throttle before you kick it will help alot.
