Rancher 350 4x4 es downshift problem

Occasionally (more often than not) when I unload my 4 wheeler from my truck, it will be in 1st or N and won't downshift. It isn't just resistant to shifting to R, it won't go from 1st to Neutral. When I press the downshift button, it makes the shifting noise even though it doesn't shift. When I use the manual tool, it goes back into N or R then I shutdown and restart and all is ok for a while. I just got this thing and is there anything that I should look at prior to wasting my money at a dealer for service? Thanks...

This has happend to me before too when you go to down shift it will just make the shifting noise but will not shift down. The only thing that has seemed to help ours was a clutch adjustment but seemed verry sensitive to it untill you get it right. When doing a clutch adjustment they tend to be verry sensitive about that so you might have to to a little trial and error, just follow what your owner manuel says. Not sure about the year of your quad but ours is the 2001 TRX350FE and we had 2 recalls on it that we had to get fixed....one recall was the shift plate and the other one was for the front suspention. Also we were trying differet brands of oil and they seemed to afect the clutch preformance....I know this may sound kinda crazy but when we switched to the honda GN4 4-stroke oil and it seemed to help the clutch engage better.

Does it only do it when you unload from a truck? It may be normal. When you leave your wheeler in your truck in first or reverse, it can rock back and forth and "fool" the angle sensor. So when you turn the key on, the machine thinks it's in a different gear than it actually is. And that causes an error in the shift program. The system is reset by keying the ignition. Try leaving it in neutral, and use the parking brake and\or tiedowns to secure it. If this kind of thing happens when you're riding it, it's probably a faulty angle sensor, unless the speedo is acting funny just before, in which case it's probably the speed sensor.
