Any suggestions what the trouble could be...?

350 ES just quit running, nothing. Noticed ground connection was loose at battery. Tightened. Nothing. Took battery in and replaced, installed, started right up. I was letting it idle while I was putting battery cover back together. Died again. Nothing. I started looking around and first I noticed on the right rear frame a gray vented/fins part that seemed hot to the touch. Next, I noticed the 30 amp main was blown. Went to put in spare it just sparked and arced and blew also. I work on what I can to save money. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You probably have a short somewhere. The fuse runs the lights and starter, so you can still bump start it or use the pull starter the way it is. But, as for whether the ES will work with a blown fuse, I have no idea???

Hmm,if this is a repeat, ignore. I haven't wired anything new. I rechecked terminals..as I said it started right up and was purring as it always has..I have to take tractor and wagon to pick it up today. I was working on it in the dark. I tried to see if there was a short, but in the dark with my headlamp it was difficult. What is the part I am referring to on the rt rear frame? I was wondering if that loose ground at battery terminal could have fried some electronic part. Man I miss my 250 Big Red, my dad was getting older and thought he would get around better on the farm with a 4-wheeler w/electronic shift. Well thanks for the help, you all get the honorary six pack.

I heard that man......I really do not like the electronic shift...I already had to solder part of that plug/harness a couple of years ago. I would like to make/find a foot shifter that I could attach to the stub that is on that machine. They give you that "emergency" shifter that just slides on there ,what a pain in the gazebo. It has been easier for my dad though. He just says "oh, you can fix it....."

Double check your battery. I've seen some aftermarket batteries that are the same size but the pos and neg are turned around. The part you were asking about is a regulator\rectifier, it has to do with mainly the charging, but it effects ignition too in this case. It will normally get warm when your key is on. Yes, it's possible a loose ground could do damage, but usually it doesn't. If you are in doubt about the reg\rect, unplug it, turn the key on and see if the fuse still blows. If that doesn't work, get back to us before hacking into your wire harness, that should be the absolute last resort.
