These plastic plates are tougher than you would think. (They make guns out of plastic these days!) Great for recreational riding. They are cheap, light weight, and very slick. When you run onto a rock, they tend to slide off where aluminum will gaul and hang you up.

For severe duty like desert racing, I do prefer the DG aluminum Baja series.

or you could just run to your honda dealer and get another steel skidplate for even cheaper. all skid plates will bend or break so dont waste your money on a diamond plate skid or anything else because it will eventually break no matter what material it is.

Default good skidplate?

My brother in law has added a bunch of chassis mods to his DS650 such as spacers, nerf bars and skid plates. He's been telling me to dump the stock plastic skid plate on my 450R and get an aftermarket one, saying it will more than likely get screwed up with rocks on the next group trail ride down to Mike's Sky Ranch.

Now, I love going fast (especially now with my R), but I'm not really the kind of guy who'd fly through hardcore terrain like rocks; still now he's got me wondering if the stock skid plate on my quad is really that fragile.

Is he full of it? (he usually is mind you...) Maybe a little envious of my R? Or does he have a point?

Being that I just got the ATV + over $600 in riding gear, my pockets aren't exactly bursting with dinero at the moment. But if my chain/sproket/disc are really in that much danger, I suppose I could tighten my belt another notch...

Any ideas?

The puropse of a full coverage skid is to protect the FRAME RAILS, not just the motor like the wimpy stock one.

we have armadillo on our swingarms, they have held up well running through the rocks at Chadwick. They are 1/4" thick (some others are only 3/16") We have PRM engine skids (bought them cheap on ebay) and they seem pretty good
