Honda basher!

No,I dont think me disagreeing with your perception of the Honda differential makes me a Honda basher, but if thats what you think, than so be it.

I've OWNED Honda's,and I like them for what they are but it stops there.I wont make up false claims just to help justify my purchase.

When I'm trying to get out of a mud hole and the right front is in the air, the only wheels that are working are the rear and probably mostly the left rear. I may not need it much but if it gets me up or out of something my buddy can't, it's worth every dime so I ordered it. LOL As you can see by my screen name, if I don't spend it, then before long, my daughter will in her inheritance

then by all means Oldtimer, spend it and let everyone know what you think!! If it is as seamless as tractech says, maybe I might try it so nobody picks on my poor Honda

and to Hondabasher, yes you are a Honda-basher

great threads guys, and this is a subject/interest, I also have. I have a 2002 Rubicon, and was considering the Locker. A call to HighLifter who offers the Locker and the Warn 424 Unlocker was interesting. The guy told me that the Locker DEFINITELY does not turn as easy as their ad implies. He strongly recommends (and sells of course) the Warn 424 package. Well, then to add to the confusion, I read here that a tap of the brake and both work. I rode last night in our recent 23" dump of snow, and yes, all four wheels turn, and when I got intentionally stuck, they were still turning. So what good would a Locker do for me? I don't do any serious mudding on trails, but I do plow snow. The total price is nearly $600.00 for both, but I hestate on the Locker part, because I need some manuerverabilty for snow plowing. Right now, I am only considering the Unlocker 424, as 90% of the time I don' even need the 4wd. I think it would extend the life of the 4wd (less stress on the joints all the time) vs. part time. Ok, lest I digress.....my real question then....is the Detroit Locker harder to turn then the full time 4wd of the stock Rubicon? They are selling the Warn 424 on Ebay for $209.00 by the way. tia

If one of the front wheels come off the ground....and that wheel is the only front wheel that is spinning...what good is the 4x4 doing....the front wheel that is on the gorund is the one that needs to have the power...
My buddied run Rincons...I have three pictures of them coming out of a mud hole...and only one of the front wheels is turning.....the one on the ground is not ......
give me your eamail and I send these pics to you ....

A diff lock has to work better ...even in moderate mud....

just my opinon !

I subscribe regularly to the Highlifter Forums and have read virtually everything there is on the Detroit Gearless Locker due to my past interest in purchasing one. I decided not to due to the additional wear on your front end componants and the finiky nature of the locker itself. It is tricky to install and most people seem to not get it right on the first try. Machining is also usually necessary. If you are a person who rides mud 95% of the time then you may want it. If you are thinking about geting the locker I would check out the Highlifter forums and do a search on it in the tech section. Others mentioned the Warn 424 and that is a neat product that allows your 4x4 to cruise around in 2wd It's easy to install and a lot of fun.

I rode with a fella who had a Detroit Gearless Locker on his Vinson. He had problems with it negatively impacting handling on hills. He does a lot of mud and was considering going back to the standard limited slip differential in the front. He stated that he got more performance in mud with tires than he did with the locker. Also, at speed it makes the Vinson harder to steer. Others have had good luck with it. The theory of the locker is sound and it has been used in trucks for years. I would also be concerned about how it impacts the CV joints and other linkages. It tends to increase the stress on these parts and lead to premature wear. Just something to watch for.

I thought that some other Big Quads have a on/off diff lock....like the King Quad....Does using the Diff lock on those quads cause exstensive wear on front end parts ?

I need to read on highlifter forums and catch up ...

Some brands do have a selectible diff lock. Since their lockers are only designed to be used when the terrain is really nasty, they're not going to be locked all the time, unlike the detroit. That and the fact that they are engineered into the quad makes the small potential for breakage well worth the benefits of having the option of a fully locked quad. If the quad was always operated in the locked mode, then I would say the potential for breakage would be much higher.
