This shouldnt be a 20 reply post...

The larger the sprocket on the front, the higher the top speed. The smaller the sprocket on the rear, the higher the top speed. You should be able to figure out the opposites.

No like the others 581 has the rear wrong. Bigger rear = less top end, smaller = more top end. Less top end equals more low end and vice-versa. Or think of it in simple terms...by making the rear sprocket larger, the front sprocket and engine will turn more times than the rear. By making the rear smaller it more closely matches the engine. Closer to 1 to 1 the faster the bike will go but less low end.

Hey 581 stick this on your CAD...
whats that supposed to mean buddy...?

if the rear has a lower gear ratio you are going to have a better acceleration....plain and simple.

there is no way you are telling me by putting on smaller gearing is going to improve top end.

a 15/46 gear ratio and a 13/43 gear ratio say, numbers are for example ONLY. the 13/43 is going to be lower, and the 15/46 will be higher, more top end.

1 tooth in the frount = 3 in the rear, so if you drop 1 in the frount it equals 3 in the rear.

btw even know how to use cadd, smarty pant.

Default this is a dumb question:

If the back sprocket is increased then the front has to turn more to get the back to make one full turn getting better acceleration and less top speed. If the front sprocket is increased then the back sprocket turns more for each front revolutions, getting better top end and less acceleration. I think that makes sence.

LMAO, this thread is a hoot.

Sorry V, you're off the ball. Dropping one tooth on the front is the same as adding 3 teeth to the rear. You've got the back end switched.

Dont forget about the tires too, a taller tire will increase top speed as well.

Default this is a dumb question:

hair if your hitching your cart to 581 then you are wrong to. 581 as usual is mixing numbers and missing the point. keeping the front the same, making the back bigger gains low in, reduces top end. The reverse is true.

581, use your cad and simulate the gears movement.

Default this is a dumb question:

Okay when I said Vinson581 was correct I just checked the front sprocket section of his post and it is correct
Smaller front = lower final drive ratio or better acceleration
Larger front = higher final drive ratio or higher top end

Now he is incorrect on the rear sprocket
Larger rear = lower final drive ratio or better acceleration
Smaller rear = higher drive ratio or higher top end

If you dont believe this to be true go ride your bike and see for yourself.

So to relate this to an actual ratio if you have a 14 tooth front sprocket and a 38 toothe rear sprocket your final drive ratio would be 2.71 if you used a smaller front sprocket say a 12 that would give you a 3.17. Any of you drag racers now that 4.10's get you better acceleration than 3.73's same thing here. None of this takes tire size into the equasion smaller tire better acceleration and larger tire higher top speed.

The three teeth on the rear equalling one on the front is also correct 14 front 40 back = 2.85
13 front 40 back = 3.08
14 front 43 back = 3.07
Now lets all go to bed and come up with another problem for tommorow to get us all excited.

I've read some funny stuff on this site but this has to be in the top three for the funniest responses of all time!!!!!!

Brings to mind what Mr. hand said on Fast Times at Ridgemont High when his students did bad on a test; "What are you, all on dope?" well, not all of you.
(Shakes head and walks off in disbelief).................but still LMAO.............
