My cdi came in Friday. I installed it and it will not run at all and when you try to start it the reverse light comes on.

loose conection somewhere, could be grounding out somewhere. wires maybe old and not getting the right amont of juice through them.

I cant explain why the reverse light is on. Its possible the cdi isnt for that quad.
Its posible the stator is bad. This is common on older motorcycles of that vintage. The stator expands when hot, and contracts back to size when cold. Years of expanding and contracting, flexs the small windings, and cold works the copper wire. Eventually , it becomes brittle, and it breaks contact, and that kills the spark...then the stator cools enough for the wires to retouch, and will work til it gets hot enough.
Its a pain in the butt, but if you carry a cheap voltmeter/ohmmeter, and when it kills, pull the stator wire plug apart, and ohm check the windings. If you get an open circuit...thats the problem. If you leave the ohmeter hooked up, youll see when it cools enough for the wires to connect and youll get the proper resistance.

As far as I know, stators arent rebuildable at home. Dont just throw a stator at it...with out troubleshooting that it is indeed bad. They aint cheap, and Im just guessing that could be the problem....the ohm check will let you know. Seeing how the new cdi didnt help, Id put the old one back on, and see if the reverse light issue goes away.
While its cold, check the stator winding resistance...so youll know ahead of time what it should read. Like i say, itll be an open circuit (infinite resistance), that will show a bad stator. I dont have the specs for that machine, but im thinking somewhere around 100 ohms is the resistance of a good stator. This is checked with the key off, and motor not running.
