i dont know about the 05's because of their different gearing, but stock for stock the 400ex will out accelerate the z everytime.... equal riders of course.
z is a great machine though. i just wanted that extra bit of torque for trail riding, that's why i went with the ex.

The Z is a tad better than a 400EX but I think people over rate them. Don't buy a Z thinking your going to whip every 400EX cause it just don't happen...................

I own both, so you aren't going to get any brand loyalty BS from me. The Z is an EX with slightly improved suspension and handling, a way lighter feel, and a much more modern and powerfull engine. The Z is by far the best all-around machine out there.
I do prefer the EX for very slow, semi-technical trails. You can stick the EX in low gear, and idle through the rough stuff. The Z likes to rev, and takes a lot more clutch work in these situations. I pick the Z for riding absolutely everywhere else.
One would be an absolute fool to pay the same MSRP for the EX (even with reverse) as the Z!
