Last time I looked 1986 was the first year for the TRX250R[/quote]

You are correct. But he said this:

The 85's were the first water-cooled motors, and the cylinders are similar (if not exactly the same) to the 86 TRX cylinders, which neither the 85 ATC, nor the 86TRX/ATC cylinders had bridged intakes. The 87-89's do.

That is all I was saying. For that matter, some of the 86 ATC motors made it onto some of the TRX250R's since Honda could no longer sell the ATC's according to Dave Moore from MP racing. I believe my ex-girlfriends cylinder from her 86TRX250R may have had an 85 cylinder on it from the factory if memory serves me. If I remember correctly, Dave moore pointed it out to me. Whatever it was, it was from the factory, because I was the first one to open it up. It was still on the original piston, rings, and bore from 1986!! Yes the 87's have bridged intakes, but they aren't as good, as far as porting is concerned. As I said, "The 88-89 have a bridged intake cylinder which is the best for porting..." I meant that this particular cylinder design is the best to be ported, not that it is the only model with a bridged intake. Many porters and tuners agree that the 87's, although they have the bridged intake, will take more time/work to run properly and may never run as strong as the 88-89 or 85-86 cylinders. I have both styles of cylinders (stock 85, trail-ported 86 and a alky drag ported 87) and prefer the early style over the 87, however none of these are as good initially to modify as the 88-89 style. My 87 cylinder has over 15 hours of work in just the porting...

The clutches in the 89's are the best for any 250R, the 85-86 have clutch problems, however these can be fixed with the 89 update kit for about $50.

I am not here to argue year model differences, but can if necessary..., however there are certain parts from each year that are worth using. My preference is the 86 bottom end, transmission and chassis, with the 89 clutch and a 88-89 ported cylinder. Add a billet head, forged piston, CR250 style reeds, larger carb, aftermarket accessory wiring and a decent aftermarket exhaust and you have a multi-year winning combination...

Yup, it's a well known fact that 1988 and 1989 were the best years for the TRX 250R.

I recently saw an IMMACULATE showroom condition 1988 TRX 250R on eBay. It's probably the last brand-new 250R on earth. The bike had never been ridden, and the chain wasn't even installed on the quad yet. (Seller claimed it was still in it's plastic bag). I saved the pictures of this particular quad, which ended up selling for over $12,000. Private message me with your email if you want to see the pictures.

These are the deals that I managed to find in my area. I can buy a 1989 Suzuki LT250R Quadracer for $2500. It has been newly restored. Mint condition. Aftermarket parts include: FMF Full Exhaust, DG Nerfs, AC Front Bumper, Ohlins Suspension, Durablue Axle. The other quad is a 1988 Honda TRX250R with LRD Full Exhaust, AC Nerf Bars, Duncan Racing Front Bumper, Laeger +1 Swingarm, Laeger A-Arms +2, Ohlins Suspension, Lonestar Axcalibar Axle, ITP Rear Beadlocks. Price $2900. Let me know what you think and if I should ask for less. Both quads are in excellent if not mint condition.
