You work the clutch and the throttle together. It’s the same with automotive transmissions.
Follow these instructions when you first start riding a manual clutch machine.
1.) Pull in clutch and pop it into first gear.
2.) Increase the engine RPM above idle so it will have more torque but don’t speed the engine up to much.
3.) Release the clutch very slowly, apply more throttle when you sense the engine coming under load and continue to release the clutch.
With a little practice you shouldn’t have to apply any throttle before beginning to release the clutch.
After that it’s a lot like riding an auto clutch except for a little throttle clutch co-ordination.
1.) Pull in the clutch, pop the shifter up with your toe with a quick little jerk to hit the next gear.
2.) Release the clutch and apply the throttle simultaneously. Don’t lead too much with the throttle though.
It won’t take long and you’ll get good at it. All motions; shift, throttle and clutch will be nearly simultaneous. I know your not supposed to ride double but it’s good to get on with someone who knows how, so you can hear what it sounds like and maybe feel the motions.
A lot of people eventually decide not to shift but I think it’s good to know how anyway.
