Too big for my 300EX....400ex or Z400?
I'm 200 lbs and I max out my 300EX easily. I've always been die hard Honda and am looking to buy new this year. It amazes me a bit that usually people pick the Z400 over the 400EX. Most of my riding is cutting thru the woods not much big jumping, high speeds etc. How do the 2 compare for this type of riding? My 300EX is a '96 and other than regular maintenence I've never turned a bolt on it, Honda reliability means alot to me. Is a Z this reliable? Would the 400EX with better shocks close the gap between the two for hadling the big stuff? If this is true the 400Z is simply a better deal.
I used to race and lose hairscrambles and enduros in the late 80's on my Suzuki, I bought an '89 250R Honda and immediately started placing and winning. I've never had any good feelings for a Suzuki after that.

Most dealers sell the 400ex's cheaper so there is a little price difference.
The Z is Very reliable, but I still say the EX is more reliable when it comes to little things. Handling is a toss up, the Z is more plush, but the EX is a tad more stable. The engine department goes to the Z, it's smoother and more powerfull, nothing wrong with the EX motor, just doesn't have the same performance potential.
Basically a Z is more of a performance bike than the EX, but for a common trail rider it wouldn't make much a difference.
Also, pretty much 2000 and up, all the big brands are good. I used to hate Suzuki to and said I would never own one, I have owned 2

I really don't know much about the suzuki, so I won't say anything about it. I love the 400ex though. I think that it's a time-proven bike. The motor has tons of potential, and it's just a fun bike to ride. If it was me, I'd go with the honda. I hear good things about the Suzuki though, but I don't know that i could talk myself into buying a suzuki though!

I only pick the EX for very slow, semi-technical trails. The motor doesn't mind being lugged down and ridden slow. For faster trails, I pick the Z. For open desert, the 450R.
The Z has a way better motor, that is proving to be every bit as reliable as the venerable old Honda. The Z is suspended a little better, and handles a little lighter. One would be nuts to pay the same MSRP for an EX as for a Z! If you decide on the EX, insist on at least a $500 discount.
