250r-300ex-250x

The 250X / 300EX are basically the same machines. The 300 is a 250 with a stroker and electric start. These are definitely not racing machines right out of the box, they are sport machines. Big difference.
The 250R was made for racing.
If you're afraid it's going to break down on you in a couple years, well, shoot! That's part of owning a toy. They freakin' break 'cause you play with them (or race them)!
Wanna have a 250R stay dependable? Easy. Maintain it well. Take a bit of time after each ride/trip and do the little bit of maintenence needed to keep it up. Doesn't take much.
Also, since it's a 2 stroke, and if you ride it a lot, keep in mind it'll need a new piston every 30-40 hours. That'll keep it from breaking down. I replace my pistons (I have 3 250Rs here) every other year minimum. Doesn't cost much to do a topend and you can do it yourself with a few sockets and a ratchet wrench (OK, you need someone to hone or bore the cylinder as needed). I can tear down a topend in under an hour, take the jug/head to the shop and pick it up the next week with a new piston and have the thing running again in a little over an hour (I've done this so many times in the last 12 years!).
So, if you want to race, get the R. If you want to just go play and have a good time, still can get the R. If you want to ride and do nothing to the machine except wash it off when you're done and do not much else, get an X.

my 250x beat 250rs on mx tracks and i was stock maybe the 250r rider sucked but i still beat them and 250x parts are just a available as 250r. For trails you will probably want reverse so the 250/300 have that. its just weather you want electric start or not. the 250 is easy to kick not hard at all. they are are great machines pretty much bulletproof but i would go with the 250/300
