My 2004 Rancher 400 is stuck in a high gear not sure which one because the board is showing esp -- and its flashing. Do those flashing dots tell codes ?Do you read them the same way you read a cars codes by counting?
Where do I find the clutch adjustment and where is this sensor Ive been reading about? Also where is the shift motor for the ES ? Any help is much appreciated thanks again !!!!!!

Have you tried rocking it back and forth while sitting on it? Sometimes it gets in a bind and the rocking will release it. The flashing does indicate codes. If you have not purchased the Honda Service Manual, do so, it's the best investment you can make.

It is probably the angle sensor or something to do with it. I had a bad plugin pin leading to it but they thought the angle sensor was bad.
Mine was warranty work so I'm not real sure where it is located. But it had the same symptoms as yours seems to have, stuck in 4th gear.

Had the same problem. Turned out to be the angle sensor. Three flashes I think is the code for that. Heard form my dealer Honda had problems with angle sensors made in Mexico, and he gave me one no charge. put it in myself and been fine since. Push the issue and maybe he will fix for free.

i don't know if any of that applies this is an auto matic, not the es 350, i don't think there is any shift motor or anything like that on the at, or an angle sensor for that matter although i could be totally wrong

I could not find an exact schematic for the 400AT. But I did find a 04 350 and the sensor location should be very similar. Here's the link:

Don't know 'bout your quad, I have 350 Rancher ES. Angle Sensor located front of motor down at the bottom and covered with a metal shield, wiring harness goes to it. Easy to replace w/ common tools and allen wrench. Suggest you pull your quad up by the front to almost straight up to work on it. Will be easier that way. Be safe, tie it off well, falls on you will ruin your whole day. Turn off the gas, and check the air box for any oil when you let it back down. Don't forget to reuse the 'O' ring from the old sensor and don't pull on the wiring connector to hard to get it off the sensor so you don't damage it and let water in. Push the release on the connector and pry gently with a screwdriver at the joint of the wiring connector and it should come apart. You shouldn't have to get rough with it. I put some sealing grease (not sure whart you call it, buy it at Radio Shack, used by radio guys to keep corrosion down on electrical connections) in my connector and put it back together for extra water protection. Sensor will only go on one way, look at it and you will see what I mean. Have fun, ride hard, be safe.
