yu will need to get the bearring carrier out in order to install a new one. Did you remember to remove the carrier bolts from the back as well as the small bolt below it? If you did and it still doesn't come out, use a heavy screw driver or a small pry bar to spread apart the area where the rear lock bolts are lovated. If you can turn the bearing carrier to tighten or loosen the chain then it should come out if you follow the above idea's. Of course you would have to have remov your rear axle and everything else but the carrier and swing arm. If none of the above ideas work and you can't rotate the carrier then you have a serious problem. That carrier needs to come out or you need a new swingarm if you want to change it out.

No it is not built in. You should be able to rotate it. If you haven't already remove the two rear bolts that lock it into position along with the small stop bolt located underneath the swingarm. Take a screwdriver or a small pry bar and spread the rear lock bolt mounts a bit. you may have to take a rubber mallet or similar item to get it to move, but it will come out.

i just changed the bearing carrier in my 300ex its very simple to do. first loosen your axle nut it will make things go easy for ya. and i recomend the rad because it has the brake caliper holder on it already

Another thing that can happen to lock you carrier in even to the point you can't adjust it is putting on a replacement skidplate and using bolts that are too long. It is possible to screw the bolt through the swingarm until they rest against the carrier.
I run into this on a couple of times.

There are a number of snap rings that need to be removed along with the bolts on the rear of the swingarm. Then take a 2X4 and put against the inside of the swingarm where the bearing carrier is. Then hit it with something big.
