man I so pissed off at my brother-in-law. This is the first time I've ever been mad him over anything...However....My quads have been over at his house since we changed our minds about going to Shiloh Ridge one weekend. He was going to pull the flatbed with the quads and I'd pull the camper. Anyway Saturday he was going to help his friend/neighbor move from one house to their new house a couple of blocks away. He had nothing to pull the flatbed with because I was gone in my truck and so was his wife with their Expedition. So this guy hooks the 16" flatbed up to my rancher 2x4 and moves Jimmy! The whole f'n housefull of furniture! I'm still about to blow my stack! How freakin stupid can you get? I've moved the flatbed with it before when it was emtpy so I can only imagine what it was like loaded. Up a hill! Not to mention a brand new set of 300.00 OUTLAW tires on it. I haven't spoken to him yet because I'm too mad. I have to cool down first but that may take a while. I wouldn't be surprised if the clutch is about gone. It seemed okay when I got it home but man, I don't know...

Anyone know how to check the clutch or whatever else it might have done?

 

I've pulled camp trailers, pick-up bed trailers, old miltary trailers and such with my ATVs and have not had problems with them. I have never replaced the clutch pack on any of our utility ATVs. Have replaced the belts on the automatics (Polaris/Kodiak). Haven't had problems with the Ruby. The Rancher will probably pull more than you think without damage. I don't know how to check for wear without removing the clutch drum and looking.

 

thanks, I guess I didn't think it through very well before I wrote that...I didn't consider that it may not be as big of a problem as I'm making it muchless that someone else may do the same thing with their atv...It all holds true regardless because it ain't his quad. Thanks for you comments.

I agree that he should not have done that type of work without your knowledge. Quite cheesy on his part. You've shown great restraint by not giving him a black eye. I was just trying to ease your concerns about damage to your Rancher. Family matters...that's a different story. Good luck with that.

 

Using your quad without your permission on a job you wouldn't approve appears presumptive, to say the least.

However, chances are; no harm done, if the rider used low enough gearing--if the clutch didn't slip, no problemo, probably.

The trailer pull ratings of ATV's are based largely upon the ATVs' abilities to BRAKE the loads; not the machines' abilities to PULL the loads.

Worst case: new primary clutch shoes, maybe fiber secondary clutch disks. Best case: no damage at all, if sufficiently low gearing was used.

Whatever happened, happened; you might try diplomatically to prevent a repeat performance.
