Yep, only one cam for the 450R. Sorry, but I don't think Honda is switching to DOHC anytime soon on this quad. On the other hand, it really doesn't need it, eh?

Yeah, a single cam directly activates one set of valves I believe and also controls the other valves via rocker arms. They devised this setup to lower weight, so (Hypothetically) it's the bridge between a single and a double cam setup. Rockers (Single) for one set of valves, Direct activation (Duals) for the other.

DOHC *double over head cams* generally have higher rev-limits and make power in the higher RPM range apposed to SOHC *Single over head cam* That has a lower rev-limit and makes power sooner. with a DOHC one cam activates the exhaust valves, where as one cam activates the intake cam. this allows for more adjusting, like exhaust/intake timing and so on. SOHC has rockers.

the DOHC is a little less reliable too, there are more moving parts and thus more stuff to wear out. But it does develop more top end power than a single cam design, would be good design for racing, but I'll stick to the regular push-rod engine in my rancher for the long haul. Overhead cam engines wear out on the top much quicker cuz the cam bearings are at the top of the engine, the last thing to get oiled. Overhead VALVE engines have the valves up top, but have push rods running down to the cam which is real close to the crankshaft, gets oiled much sooner, but at the sacrifice of top end power.
