My daughter got my "hand me down" EX when she was 12. Now keep in mind she was real big for her age (she could pass for 18), and had been riding for many years.
The EX is a nice machine, and handling is excellent. As long as he is large enough and mature enough to handle it, it is a nice choice because it is a bike he can grow into. If you think that is to big, the 300EX is a nice transition machine for those who like a fully manual clutch, but aren't experienced or large enough for a bigger machine.

THe 300 is out of the question his Trailblazer can beat one of those and he want more power. But if my buddy holds to his price on his 02 400ex I will get it.

Sounds great for him. Unless he really wants reverse, then go with the z400.

Hey, if a trailblazer will beat a 300, there is something wrong with that 300! The 300 hops up pretty nicely, and it has real sport quad suspension and excellent handling. Our moded 300 flat out ripped. Probably the best trail bike ever made. Wish I had kept it. They are however overpriced.

Getting the 400ex for $2200. But on his Trailblazer it is an awsome 250 and will hang with any of the sport quads. On the 300 being the best trail quad I have to say there isnt any trail machine like a 500 Scrambler.

Yeah that will be a good fourwheeler for him. I got my trailblazer when i was about 10 then got a cr125 then got a 04 400ex last year , and well already selling it to get a 450r. You always want to get something bigger and better, and more importantly faster. haha.
