Your K&N is passing dirt!
All I can say is that I've been using a K&N on my forman for the last 5 years without any problems and it sees a good cross hatch of riding conditions. The airbox itself is an inportatnt step of the filtering process, if its stock your in better shape than haveing no lid or a bunch of holes drilled in it.
Another important item is maintenance of the filter, keeping its cleaned, but more importantly properly oiled. I've run with and without the prefilter, it really only extends the filter cleaning interval and keeps big chunks of crap out of the filter. I've closely inspected the carb. and removed it for cleaning 4 times (usually after winter storage) only to find no evidence of dirt in it having gotten past the K&N filter.
At the end of the day you have to use what you feel comfortable with. No sence arguing here on whats best, I'm doubtfull that any of us will change anothers mind.
