2001 Recon idles high
Hi, all. My father picked up a 2001 Recon for a good price this past weekend. We noticed that it idles fine on startup and then gradually starts to idle very fast (faster than normal). The guy brought the price down since he said it might need to have the varb cleaned. Appearently the quad sat for several months in storage. My father plans on draining and replacing the fluids and plug, etc. Could it be idling high from bad gas? the guy did not use any stabilizer. Any thoughts? Thanks.

No, we haven't even got that far. He actually picks the bike up today. On what side is the carb idle screw (fuel select **** side or other side)? Also, he noticed a tube just hanging loose. Does the Recon have any sort of vacuum controls? I wonder if that line was a vac line and came off? Thanks again.

IIRC, the idle screw is the only one you see from the side. I DEFINITELY recall scorching my hands and getting cramps trying to get at the f#@*&* air/fuel screw, which is recessed and at the underside (bottom) of the carb. there is a specialty screw driver for that one, or you can try a screwdriver bit, but it is rotten to adjust that one. i found removing the seat and adjusting it from thru/under at that angle worked best. Hinda spec was about 2 1/2 turns out.

i was messing with that mixture screw on mine, and it didnt seem to change the rpm much. I would adjust the idle speed thingy first. Go and warm the machine up with some normal riding, then adjust the screw (it actually has a twisty **** thing on it , just turn with fingers, it's on the right-hand side of the carb) Set it for about 1400 RPM, you will need a tachometer for precise adjustment. I bought one of those tiny-tach things from dennis kirk or JR Graham, it has a wire that you just wrap around your spark plug wire and a ground wire that goes to the frame somewhere, and it reads engine rpm. That way i can constantly monitor my rpm at idle

OK. Last night we pulled the idle screw all the way out. Unscrewed the part that has the throttle cable running into the carb housing (sleeve, spring and needle assembly) and sprayed a very generous amount of carb cleaner in both orfices. Pulled the vac lines and sprayed carb cleaner in the vac assembly on the carb. assembled everything back and screwed the adjustment screw all the way in. Fired it up and it idled very high but probably because of the screw position. Turned the screw out a few turns and it purrs. Took it out for a ride and it works great! Must of had a passage blocked or something. Thanks again for the ideas and help.
