I have been getting serious about doing a quad motor conversion lately, and it occured to me that 400ex's have great ergonomics, suspension, and they don't way a lot. pull the motor out, and stick in a ktm 520/525, or cr500, or lt500, or soo on, and you have a powerful "flickable" bike... has anyone else done such a conversion using the EX??? I have found several with the aftermarket shocks, a-arms, and wider axles etc... for around $3k. grea deals. a 440 would be a great find, but I would rather buy one with the suspension mods I want, because that is something that is way harder to piece together for cheap.

My buddy recently had a 400EX with a CR500 motor engine in it and let me tell you, that thing was a beast. The only problem with that bike was trying to get the tires hooked up, even on the street with knobbies it would just spin for days. It was a bad fast bike, not to many others got in its way around here. I'd say go for it.

any ideas on dampening the motors, so the frame doesn't become a mess? I can weld myself, but constantly repairing is no fun.
maybe polyurethane mounts??? wonder where I could get some..... I found a awesome 400ex on Ebay with works shocks, +2+1 a-arms, and a +4 axle for 2800, so I am definately getting excited...... can't wait to start this process..... what a beast, my father in laws YFZ's, and 700 will be begging for mercy.

I had originally planned on the 525 4 stroke because they are more well known, and would be easier to find parts for.... I am also not against the xr 650 motor with water cooling, I am just really limited when it comes to finding the motors themselves. titanium would be nice sure, but that is too high dollar to buy, and fabricate, I am planning on just normal quad steel, I want it to be mistaken for stock too, so I need it too look more like factory, and less like a hack job

oh i definately will, I just need to find a cheap EX with the wide a-arms axel, and works/elka/axis shocks near northern CA. I found a decent one, but Utah is a Ways away. anyone here near Redding CA? I wouldn't mind driving to northern Oregon, or even into Nevada for it depending on the price, and the accessories it has.

have no clue,.... more scarce for sure, and I know it is smaller then the XR motor, I am debating on staying honda though now and going with either the 650r or 500r conversion.... I e-mail a fellow forum member about his personal quad, and requested pics (with XR motor) I would do a 500 in a heartbeat if I, or someone else knew how to dampen the motor in the chassis to get it to resist vibrations... I don't want to be welding after every trip.
