400EX Rear Bearings
#1
Hey guys, I need some help with my rear bearing dilema. I searched the forums and never really found what I was looking for. I replaced my rear bearings about 5-6 months ago and they went out on me just this past weekend again. I used the stock carrier and a pivot works bearing kit. What are the advantagae of going to an aftermartket carrier and what are my options? Am I better off getting something with a grease zerk because the stock one doesn't have one. Thanks in advance for the input and advice!!

they could be cheap bearing. when you install them be sure to drive them in by the outter race. if you drive on the inner race you will damage the bearings. you dont need to regrease them because they are sealed and greased from the factory. axle bearings are in a bad place so they will fail from time to time, but you should get more than 5-6 months from them

correct install is very important...grease is more important
you can drill and install a grease fitting on the stock housing
over tightening your axle will lead to shortened life
the wider the axle the higher the load that is placed on the bearings
loose axles cause the mopst problems...with that ex make sure the assy. is tight before you ride...just grab the rear rotor and move it back and forth...it should be tight to the axle and not have any freeplay

Where would you drill the grease zerk on the stock housing? Should you apply grease to the axle before assembling? Also one of the ball bearings wore a little groove in the spacer that rests between the bearings. Is this any thing to be concerned about?
