would improper vavle adjustment cause an engine to burn oil or what else cold cause it to burn it

Do you have a compression checker? If so, check the compression. Then pour an ounce of oil in the cylinder and check again. If the compression comes up...it's the rings. If no change...it's the valve stem seals. Be sure engine is warm when you do this.
