hard to start 250x
#1
I am having a problem with my 92 250x. I bought it used about a month ago. It ran strong ans started easy. All of a sudden, it became hard to start. When I do get it started and warm, it idles fine. It also seems fine through about 1/4 throttle. After that it starts to sputter. If I ride it, it will not take any gas after 1/4 throttle. I can't find anything wrong. I have gone through the carburator and replaced the split fire spark plug with stock NGK. Anyone have any suggestions?

You were right! thanks for the tip! I took apart the fuel shut off valve and found a piece of hardened crud in the bottom of the cap. it must have been blocking the flow. reinstalled everything and it runs like a charm again.

OK, I guess I spoke too soon. I am still having a hard time getting it started. the 1/4-full throttle problem was it not getting enough gas.
what happens now is it is cold, i attempt to start without the choke and get no response. I then close the choke and still nothing. at this point i am starting to smell gas. all it will do now is seem like it is going to start (let off a few rumbles of the motor). This happens if the choke is on or not.
so again, I need help... any ideas?

mine does that too it takes up to 20 kicks sometimes when its cold and when it does start its like it doesent get gass and almoast shuts off but when it warms up its fine i think we both have a compression prob check your gaskets and exhaust flange (could be lose)mines bad 2 so that could be it

also try slowly depressing the kick starter 2 or 3 times prior to giveing her a good boot in order to build up compression should make a big diff if you do have a compression leak . check the specs for your bike and get a compression test meter just to be sure good luck

I think you are right about me having a compression problem. I have not had a chance to put a meter on it though.
when i kick it and let go of the kick start lever right away, it seems like it wants to actually start. one night this week, i got it to start this way. I was wondering if it has something to do with the decompression mechanism. i read some where online that someone disconnected it. could it cause this problem? I looked in my repair manual and it doesn't say how this should work. all it explains is how to inspect it when rebuilding the engine.

clean carb your floats are sticking when they stick shuts off gas flow or if stuck open getts to much fuel and floods out which will soon fowl plug. try tapping on carb slightly with wrench with seat off of corse sometimes this unstick floats if it starts clean carb cause you dont want to cut off way back in woods do it right so your safe riding. you also might need new timing chain if slack in chain can sometimes throw off timing
