2001 400EX Gearing (Sprockets)...
Hey All,
My 2001 400EX doesn't have 1/2 the torque as my 2004 Z400, I usually just wright it off as being aged, which may or may not be part of the problem...
But today I looked up the Sprockets on the 400EX, it looks like the Front Sprocket is a 15tooth, and the Rear Sprocket is a 38tooth. On my Z400 the stock gearing is 14tooth front, and 40tooth rear.
Is that why my Z400 has soo much more torque? Or is the gearing inside the transmission different?
I just ordered a 13tooth front sprocket for my Z400, to give it even more torque for Dunes, and trails.
What type (Size) of sprockets does everyone run on their 400EX?
Thanks,
-ThaChad

The stock gearing on the 99-04 400 ex is 15/38, if you run 14/39 it will rip like a hole new machine, I went to 14/39 and it was amazing the difference in bottom end, it did lose a bit on top end but i trail ride so top speed means nothing to me, I have since switched to 22" rear tires and dropped to 13/39 and it is about the same as 14/39 with 20" tires. The factory gears the 400 more for top speed, remember the 400 was originally designed as a race machine and not a trail machine, but with a little gearing change the difference is night and day.
