Default 400EX Rear Bearings

My bearings are toast on my 400EX. No small wonder, the bike is 7 years old and has hundreds of hours on it. I should have done them long ago, but let it get bad enough that the bearings got hot on the last ride and now the axle wobbles a little.

So, my question is do you think I did some real damage by neglecting it so long? What am I in for if I really totally toasted them???

i've not had this prob yet but my lil bro has. we replaced his it wasnt that bad, took longer for the parts to get there than it did to fix it. DO NOT BUY another OEM part, try to go after market if possible. i cant exaxtly remember what type a he bought and price, it was bad priced. whenever you got to take the nut (the inner axle lock nut) it real tight so you need a good sized breaker bar. it is has left handed threads. be sure and tighten it back upto 65 ft lbs. get a haynes book from your local shop those things are awesome, a hayens manual is great. we've owned one for every rcuk, four wheeler, dirt bike we've ever owned.

after you've taken off the axle lock nut, you'll need a set of snap-ring pliers. or a set of real fine point needle nose pliers.

The carrier is damaged as well as the axle. Will cost some $$$.

Going with a Lonestar 4 bearing carrier (instead of the stock 2 bearing) and a Durablue axle.

Thinking back, I got caught in a desert flash flood last winter. Had to do quite a bit of riding in dirty water with fine silt and sand in it, and that is when all my problems began!

The dual row carriers are nice, but have you considered tapered? I personally like setting the pre-load on a wheel bearing.
