Advice on big bore set up for a 400ex for long steep sand hill drags.

I like all kinds of riding and want to keep as much reliability as I can. I want a engine that wont get too hot or tempermental. However I really like to race people up sand Mt. and I want, maybe a 465 bib bore or so that will rev high and be really good for sand drags up steep hills. What set up would be good that you know of and what is the cost?

Get 426 11:1 piston, ported, web cam and get 13/39 sprockets that is what I heard would work the best. There are two guys with this set-up and they also ride at your same place. They say with theses mods they beat ds's banshee's and 250R's.
I have these mods too and the bike really flys.

My 2 1/2 cents. I ride at Jericho as well, and although I don't race up and down sand mountain I am a little bigger than most and needed a little extra power. I debated between the raptor ( which I had money down) and a big bore kit on my 400ex. I had the opportunity to ride both on the same day and watch both race up Sand Mountain. The 440ex won the race, however the Raptor needed some adjustments. At any rate, I decided from a handling standpoint and the fact I do more MX type riding and jumping than drag racing the big bore was the way to go. So I started some research. I was told from one of the most reputable companies in town, that I would be better to simply bore out my heads and put a bigger piston in, then to put in a better cam and port the heads. The place is called Lindsy Machinary in Sandy, UT. Now, I have a connections there so I don't know if the price is going to be consistent but for all this work it's running about $700. That is boring it .80 over and putting in a Weisco 11:1 piston. Then porting the heads and putting in a bigger cam. I've seen a bike with an 11:1 piston fly up sand mountain without a 440kit and was completely impressed. So your call. The reason they suggest boring over the 440 kit is that you don't have to put in a sleeve, and it is about a 430. This allows a little wiggle room in the head if you have to rebuild later, you still have room to bore it out, but with the 440 kit your at the limits. Again, I'm not a mechanic, but I do alot of reading and research before I spend this much money and it was the best decision for me. I'd love to tell you it increased the performance 10 times, but truth is I take it in tonight and won't have it back for a few weeks. Good luck on your decision, hope to see you at the dunes.
