Default 20hr service

Its time for the 20hr service on my new Rancher and Recon. Should I let the dealer handle this? How much can I expect to pay?

Default 20hr service

I just did mine on my new 05 Rubicon ES. I changed the oil and filter and that was it. Cost for that stuff was $37 bucks. I bought the oil and filter at the dealer. If you can change your oil in your truck or whatever you can do this. I would recommend a torque wrench for the bolts if you do not know how to "feel" the recommended pounds. I did not have the valves inspected because I don't think it really needs it. And just check the rest of the ATV yourself. It is your bike you should get to know it. Hope that helps. Oh ....just call the dealer and ask what they charge for the 20hr svc. Should be around 100 bucks.

So basically, that valve adjustment they are saying is crucial is not really all that important after 20 hours?

the valve adjustment is important so you dont toast your valves or wear the valve train out. Pretty easy to do, just takes about a half hour or so, the service manual tells how to do it. I checked mine on my '05 at 20 hrs, they were perfectly fine, didnt have to adjust anything. But it depends on who put it together at the factory, they could have been tight or loose, it's just a good idea to check it at least once every couple years or if they get noisy.

Every time I've come accross this, I always say the same. Have the dealer do the first service.

This'll gurantee your warranty if something happens and they question if maintenance was done

It lets a trained person adjust the valves which is the life of a 4 stroke motor

A good shop adjusts all the cables, brakes and checks all nuts and bolts. This is the stuff that wears in after the first 20 hours and usually dont have to be touched again for a long while or at all.

After this service I do all my own maintenance, as many of the services performed after 20 hours rarely need to be looked at again.

Basically a 20h service should be much much more then a simple oil change.
